Bough Digital’s Blogs of the Week: Week Ending July 26th
By Karl Tippins, Jul 29, 2014
Welcome once again to Bough Digital’s Blogs of the Week. In a change from what we normally do, and because some of the team are away enjoying their holidays, all of this week’s top blogs have been chosen by myself.
So, what have been the most significant pieces of digital marketing content from the last week?
Guide to Optimising Client Sites 2014
The first “must read” piece of content from this week is this brilliant Guide to Optimising Client Sites from SEO Book. Whether you’re a freelance SEO, a new digital marketing agency looking to get started, or even someone working client side that needs to put together a presentation for a marketing director, it’s a great guide that can walk you through all the key aspects of putting together an optimisation strategy.
The biggest takeaway from this piece of content is probably the point that there are “few rules” when it comes to SEO. It is easy for SEO agencies to fall into a formulaic approach of doing the same thing repeatedly, whereas in reality what works for one client may not work for another.
How to Use Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper
Structured data. Two words that can send chills down the spine of many a webmaster looking to improve their SEO.
The timing of this guide, which is featured on the Search Engine Journal site, is potentially significant when we consider the recent removal of photos from search in respect of Google Authorship. Speculation has been rife throughout the digital marketing industry that structured data may be the next thing to be “downvalued” by Google, particularly as there’s a growing feeling that many are now looking for ways to abuse it.
Don’t let that make you feel like you shouldn’t be doing anything about structured data mark-up, however. We all know that when it comes to digital marketing and SEO in particular that something that works today might not work in six months, and the reality is you’ll feel some benefit from doing this task if it is relevant to your website.
Do Links from Moz Violate Google’s Quality Guidelines?
This Moz post would definitely have been my choice had we been picking one piece of content each from across the industry.
A Moz contributor found an unnatural links warning in his Google Webmaster Tools account, and upon presumably dealing with the links he thought were harmful, did what anyone would do and filed a reconsideration request. What he wasn’t reckoning on was Google (who we referred to as ‘Lord Google’ when posting this on Google+) rejecting the reconsideration request and citing a link from Moz as an example of one of the links in violation of their quality guidelines.
This leads us to this post, wherein Moz founder Rand Fishkin questions why a link from the site would be considered a violation. The comments beneath the blog post give some great insight, too, and even go some way as to potentially indicating what Google actually look for when dishing out manual penalties and dealing with reconsideration requests.
That ends this week’s look at the top content from across the digital marketing industry. Get in touch using the comments form below or via our contact us page to share your favourite content from the last week.
