Can SEO Hurt my Website?

That all depends on the type of SEO you do and the reason you're embarking on an SEO program.

If your SEO plan is to try and make your website "better for the search engines," to follow an old-school way of thinking, then in all likelihood you will hurt your website as you won't be adding anything, and perhaps even devaluing your site, in the eyes of a real life user.

The flip side of that is if you're using an SEO strategy to make your website brilliant for website visitors, it is unlikely that this SEO will hurt your website, although how much it benefits your site will depend on a number of different factors, including what your competitors are doing and the quality of the design, development, and content in respect of your website.
