How Can My Site be Penalised for Duplicated Content?

A common website mistake is that there can be hundreds of variations of one page by not implementing some very obvious website changes. You need to ensure that ONLY ONE page is viewable to search engines unless you could get a duplicate content penalty. There are two main techniques that can cause duplicate content (without deliberately replicating two pages on a single website). These two are as follows:

1. Domain Name

Ensure that all URL’s all point to one unique place. This can include:

  • http://www.domainname.com
  • www.domainname.com
  • http://domainname.com

You should generally re-direct the non-www version of your website using a 301 redirection. You need to use only one mode of web-domain address and be consistent.

2. Individual URL’s

You should generally only have one mode of specific URL per page. For instance, you need to produce a 301 redirect for the following:
