There are however some techniques that can dampen the impact of changing domain names. The easiest and most logical is to insert a 301 redirect from every page on your website to the new page on the new domain. Google have taken it one step further, and now actually allow you to specify this information via their Webmaster Tools functionality under the “configuration” and then “change of address”.
Their advice, which is normally worth following, is to:
- Ensure that your content is 100% set-up on your new domain
- Redirect all your existing content to the new domain with a 301 redirection
- Add and verify your new website via Webmaster Tools
Although Google has the majority market share in the industry, this advice is also powerful for the other major search engines such as Yahoo and Bing.
